It can be hard for any dog to find the perfect home - but one adorable pup is finding it extra difficult to get adopted due to her shy nature.

Aska, a three-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, has spent over eight months in kennels, and has had to watch 150 other dogs go to their forever homes while she's been patiently waiting.

She is currently living at York Animal Home after being handed in by a previous owner who could no longer take care of her.

"Aska is a lovely, sweet girl but can be terribly shy around new people which means she's finding it difficult to show off her wonderful personality in kennels," said an RSPCA spokesperson.

"She's very active and playful once she comes out of her shell. She just needs an understanding owner who will give her time and patience to settle and grow in confidence, and will benefit from lots of exercise and stimulation.

"She's never been taught that it's okay to be left home alone so she'll initially like someone to be home alone and to slowly build her confidence."

Aska's online profile describers her as an "active, playful girl who will need an equally active home so she gets the exercise and stimulation she needs to keep her happy", and says that she would ideally need someone who could be at home most of the time.

It also said she needs an understanding and experienced owner who "will give her time and patience to settle and become the great pet we know she can be".

The RSPCA added: "Aska is very clever and knows lots of commands like 'sit'. She'd be best suited to an adult-only household and would prefer a home without a cat but could live with another dog."
