If you're still on furlough or simply have some extra time on your hands, we have the perfect way for you to fill it.

ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos are looking for an 'army of volunteers' to help them get back on track post-lockdown, which presented the Zoological Society of London with 'the biggest challenge faced in our history'.

Interested? Of course you are. Be sure to sign up quick though, as we reckon these places will be in hot demand.

The zoos have been hit hard after being forced to close for three months due to coronavirus, but with a helping hand from Sir David Attenborough who has campaigning for the public to donate to save the zoos, the future looks promising.

Lucky volunteers will take on stewarding roles, responsible for ensuring visitors have safe, informative and enjoyable trips.

Volunteer manager Rhiannon Green told the Metro: "We are delighted to have the zoos open again, but we are facing operational challenges that are new to us. We know from the heart-warming response to our fundraising appeal that people really want to help us.

"For some people sparing time might be how they can help us best - especially those on furlough, or whose travel plans have been disrupted.

"We need cheery, flexible people who can help visitors enjoy their day while respecting the measures that keep everyone safe."

According to the ZSL application page, the zoos are looking for "engaging and flexible individuals who enjoy chatting to diverse audiences to join the team at our zoos." Volunteer duties include ensuring visitors:

  • Feel welcome and supported during their visit
  • Navigate their way around the zoos safely within social distancing measures
  • Have a fun and informative visit
  • Learn about the work of the zoos and wildlife conservation programmes

You can apply to be a stewarding volunteer here.
