Päntsdrunk Is The Finnish Wellness Concept We've All Been Doing All Along

Päntsdrunk Is The Finnish Wellness Concept We've All Been Doing All Along

Päntsdrunk is a wellness concept most of us can probably get on board with - and it's a far cry from yoga or juicing.

The term, which comes from the Finnish word 'kalsarikänni', is the very particular feeling that comes from getting drunk at home in your underwear.

Penguin, which recently published the book Päntsdrunk by author Miska Rantanen, explain the concept further: "It is no coincidence Finland consistently rates in the top five in happiness ranking.

"In Finland, Päntsdrunk is considered a path to recovery and self-empowerment to help you face your future challenges, much like the 'lagom' or 'hygge' of their other Scandi neighbours.

"The Päntsdrunk method also includes binging on Netflix, scrolling mindlessly on your phone, sweet and salty snacks, sofa time, and blocking all work communications

It sounds pretty perfect and it's certainly a more realistic way to relax for lots of us.

Hygge, the Danish concept of being cosy and comfortable, brings up images of steaming hot chocolate, a roaring fireplace or the wrapping up in a warm jumper.

But there's a certain amount of pressure that comes with embracing hygge, particularly the kind you can share on Instagram.

Päntsdrunk is more about relaxing properly - sitting in your oldest underwear with a glass of wine in one hand and a bag of crisps in the other, in front of the TV.

According to Rantanen, Päntsdrunk grew as a response to Finland's cold climate.

Heading to your local pub isn't actually all that appealing when you have to wrap up in every item of woollen clothing you have, especially if you have to take it all off again when you get inside.

So instead, Finns decided to stay inside to relax, with no intention of going out. No need for layers, only pants.

Rantanen explains in his book: "Many Finnish phenomena set the bar high: the best education system, gender equality, a flourishing welfare state, sisu or bull-headed pluck.

"Behind all of these accomplishments lies a Finnish ability to stay calm, healthy and content in a riptide of endless tasks and temptations. The ability comes from the practice of "kalsarikanni" translated as pantsdrunk."

The concept is now so ingrained in Finland's culture that it is even mentioned on the country's official tourism website.
