A recent report by the British Dental Journal revealed that many high-street teeth-whitening kits are incapable of lightening your gnashers while others can cause "substantial" damage - apart from this one brand.

Spotlight Whitening Strips, which is the brainchild of certified dentists Dr Lisa and Dr Vanessa Creaven, is the over-the-counter treatment that contains small amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide to lift stains safely and effectively.

For the red wine lovers and coffee drinkers amongst us, the bleaching agent is the only clinically effective ingredient to whiten teeth and is the active component utilised in professional whitening products.

The issue raised by the British Dental Journal in February sheds light on multiple over-the-counter teeth whitening kits available on the high-street that do not contain hydrogen peroxide.

Researchers tested several teeth whitening products available and discovered that some of them "substantially damaged" tooth enamel, heightened the risk of developing gingivitis and increased the likelihood of accumulating more stains.

Others proved incapable of noticeably lightening teeth, meaning customers may be wasting time, money and effort in their attempts to get a whiter smile.

However, Spotlight Whitening Strips, which is available from Boots or online, boast a low dose of peroxide (0.1%) that generally doesn't cause sensitivity unlike several products available in the US, where they're able to use up to 14% peroxide.

Speaking about the findings, Dr Vanessa Creaven told Pretty52: "It is important that consumers are made aware of the damaging effects of some teeth-whitening kits."

She continued: "We are glad that the British Dental Journal published their latest report and hopefully the public will understand what to look out for when purchasing teeth whitening kits and what to avoid.

"Products such as charcoal and Hydrogen Peroxide free teeth whitening kits are acting by permanently and irreversibly softening the outer layer of the tooth surface making customers who use these kits more likely to develop decay and gum issues as a result."
