The Devil Wears Prada is easily one of the most iconic films to come out of the noughties, and as a young girl who always wanted to get into journalism, it played a huge role in my growing up.

After all, who wouldn't dream of travelling to New York to work at one of the most successful fashion magazines in the world?

We all willed for Andy's (Anne Hathway) success and we joined her in hating the evil force that was Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and her lowly assistant Emily (Emily Blunt).

Well, that's what we thought until one girl has summarised just how naïve we were in a single tweet.

In our teenage years, we sympathised with Andy's chef boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier) and thought he was pretty cool. Cute even.

We were blinded by the glamour of the fashion industry and saw Miranda as an evil and antagonising boss who had no respect for her employees.

But fast forward a decade and we can see how Nate was actually a f*ckboy who couldn't see that Andy needed to make sacrifices for her career.

Meanwhile, Miranda and Emily were both hugely successful in the fashion industry with insane amounts of passion and ambition for what they do.

This is echoed by Andy's ambition to succeed in the world of journalism and drive her career - even if it does mean working for 'the devil' on her journey to the top.

Her drive and determination is the underlying message in the film and not her relationship with Nate, or her unsupportive friends.

While it may have appeared to be a rom-com during which saw Andy and Nate reunite at the end of the film only for Andy to then land her dream job, the real love affair of the movie was between Andy and her career.

Watching the film post-puberty, it is more than clear to us that Andy's boyfriend and friends belittle her success rather than supporting her journey. After all, Nate made fun of his girlfriend's fashion sense when she first landed the job at Runway magazine and she still put her needs before her own.

@Pelin, we salute you for pointing out what we should've realised 10 years ago.
