Twilight Author Originally Wanted Henry Cavill To Play Edward Cullen

Twilight Author Originally Wanted Henry Cavill To Play Edward Cullen

We all know and love Henry Cavill from starring as Superman in the DC Extended Universe and as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher, but we could have seen him as Edward Cullen in Twilight, according to author Stephenie Meyer.

Before Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were hired to play Edward Cullen and Bella Swan respectively, Stephanie had a different idea.

Buzzfeed unearthed an old post from the author's own website, in which she described her personal dream team for the film adaptation.

"My opinions on the movie matter to no one. I have no influence on what goes on with the movie at all. No one is going to ask who I think should star in Twilight," Stephanie wrote all the way back in 2007.

"Indisputably the most difficult character to cast, Edward is also the one that I'm most passionately decided upon," Meyer wrote at the time. "The only actor I've ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is... Henry Cavill."

Shocker! It's hard to imagine someone other than Robert as Edward.

Stephenie shared some of the most popular suggestions for Edward's casting and Robert was number two behind Hayden Christensen. Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lord of the Rings alum Orlando Bloom was third.

For Bella, Stephenie wanted Emily Browning and she also had Umbrella Academy actor Elliot Page and future The Flash star Danielle Panabaker in mind.

Taylor Lautner And Kristen Stewart Just Had A Mini 'Twilight' Reunion

Like Robert, it's very difficult to image someone else as Bella and the character has certainly become one of Kristen's most well-known roles

As the film adaptation continued to be development and several of Stephanie's choices for the main roles became too old to play high schoolers, she adjusted her list.

Henry became her top choice for Carlisle, instead but that role was eventually played by Peter Facinelli.

Stephenie was ultimately happy when both Robert and Kristen were casted.

"I'm very excited to have Kristen Stewart play Bella in the upcoming Twilight movie," she wrote.

"She's an amazing actress with experience all across the board-action, horror, comedy, romance, and more. Since Twilight has moments that fit into every one of these genres, I'm thrilled to have a Bella who has practice with them all."

The Twilight saga has had a resurgence in recent months. Earlier in the year, Stephenie published Midnight Sun, a companion novel which retells the story from the first Twilight book from Edward's perspective, rather than Bella's.

Plus, we can't forget Brody Wellmaker, the Tik Tok star who has accumulated more than 5 million followers thanks to recreating scenes from the Twilight films.
