The hype is real.

Top Boy fans, it's happening. Season 2 (or season 4, if we count the two series that aired on Channel 4 before the show scored a Netflix commission) is officially confirmed.

Executive producer Drake shared the news on his Instagram feed, posting a picture of the script with the caption: 'WE BAAAAACK'.

Meanwhile, Netflix's Top Boy Twitter account announced: 'TOP BOY Season 2 begins filming this spring. @AshleyWalters82, @TheRealKano, @onlymikes_ and @LittleSimz will return as Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley. Stay tuned.'

Fans are hyped - at the time of writing, Drake's post has over a million likes. So, what do we know about the upcoming series?

When will it air?

Netflix's UK and Ireland Twitter account confirmed that production would begin this spring, but shared no further details of an air date - only a secretive zipper-mouthed emoji.

Drake previously confirmed that a fourth season would drop sometime in 2020. Unexpectedly responding to an Insta post from GRM Daily questioning whether the show would return, the Canadian hitmaker replied "Of course".

In short, hold tight and stay tuned.

Who's in it?

All the key cast members are set to return (phew!) with Ashley Walters, Kano, Micheal Ward and Little Simz reprising their roles as Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley. We're guessing some new characters will be thrown into the mix too, but no announcements have been made.

What will happen?

Season 3 of Top Boy was released in September 2019 to widespread critical acclaim, and went on to become one of Netflix's most popular series that year.

The Netflix series was a relaunch of the gritty London crime drama - now referred to by its subtitle Summerhouse - which aired on Channel 4 and was cancelled in 2013.

Series creator Ronan Bennett penned a season that picked up where the second series left off.

In series 3, we saw Dushane return to London and take up his place in the drug trade. He buddied up with longtime friend and partner in crime Sully, who was fresh out of a stint in prison. The pair came up against competition from new rival Jamie, a young and ambitious gang leader after his own slice of the market.

Tensions rose when Sully killed Driss, putting a strain on his friendship with Dushane.

At the end of the 10-part series, Dushane proposed a partnership with Jamie, now jailed for a crime he didn't commit in order to protect his family.

Elsewhere, it transpired that addicts Sarah and Lee were in fact undercover agents tailing Dushane.

We can expect season 4 to pick up where these threads left off - and given the undercover agent storyline, it seems likely that season 4's top boy is at risk of being tracked.

Will there be a season 5?

The upshot is: right now, we don't know. The only information we have to hand is that when Netflix first relaunched the series, they announced that two series were in the works. This would make season 4 the final series.

But with fans hungry for more, that could well change.
