Warning article might contain some spoilers.

If you're not quite over Rick Grimes' departure from The Walking Dead then you don't need to be upset for much longer as there could be three new films based on the TV show.

The trio of big-budget films will see Andrew Lincoln reprise his role as Rick and will be broadcast on the basic cable network.

Chief content officer Scott M. Gimple is currently writing the first film, and production is set to begin in 2019.

However, an air date has not been decided as well as a location for filming as Andrew departed The Walking Dead in order to spend more time with his family in England.

Scott told The Hollywood Reporter: "The story of Rick will go on in films. Right now, we're working on three but there's flexibility in that.

"Over the next several years, we're going to be doing specials, new series are quite a possibility, high-quality digital content and then some content that defies description at the moment.

"We're going to dig into the past and see old characters. We're going to introduce new characters and new situations."

The movies evolved from a conversation between Scott and Andrew during series four of The Walking Dead.

Andrew said that the original plan was for Rick Grimes to be killed off in season eight. However, they decided to continue Rick's story so that it made better logistical sense for the actor.

It also allowed AMC to expand the overall franchise.

Scott added: "Rick Grimes is an amazing character and Andy has done an amazing performance.

"There were story ideas brewing that, as the years went on, seemed very compatible with continuing to tell the Rick story in another format that would allow him time with his family."

Last night, The Walking Dead fans were left disappointed after AMC broadcast Andrew Lincoln's final scenes as Rick Grimes in the US.

In the episode, fans were led to believe that Rick had died after he blew up the bridge he was stood on.

However, the final scene showed Jadis/Anne spotting Rick collapsed on the bank and carrying him off in a helicopter, telling him he's going to be okay.
