Viewers of Friday's This Morning were overcome with emotion by the unlikely friendship of 85-year-old Beryl Poulson and four-year-old Scarlett Pollard, whose mum passed away from cancer a year and a half ago.

The pair have formed a close bond after they starred together on BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 documentary, Old People's Home For 4 Year Olds, which returns on Monday, 8th October.

This Morning aired preview clips of Beryl and Scarlett from the touching documentary, showing them writing cards together and becoming close friends.

Channel 4's programme aims to tackle the loneliness epidemic facing an ageing generation, especially for those living on their own.

A number of studies have shown it to be beneficial for both age groups when older and younger people spend time together.

And sitting on the sofa of the ITV chat show, it was evident just how close Scarlett and Beryl are, as the little girl beamed ear to ear while warmly embracing her new pal.

"She's my best friend, aren't you," Beryl said, to which Scarlett replied: "Yeah!"

Scarlett immediately ran over to Beryl in the footage from Old People's Home For 4 Year Olds, telling hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes that she just 'chose her'.

In another heartbreaking clip from the Channel 4 documentary, the two can be seen writing cards together in a task. The nursery teacher asked: "Beryl, if you are all right to help Scarlett write, 'To Mummy and Daddy'."

But the little girl said: "No, my mum's died, so Gran-Gran and Daddy."

"She will always be the little girl whose mum died when she was three," explained Tim's dad on the show. "But I don't want her to grow up to be the woman whose life was blighted by her mum dying when she was three."

Beryl decided to get involved with the series after seeing how popular the previous one was.

Viewers took to Twitter to shed a few tears over the segment, with one person sharing: "@thismorning this how beautiful is [Beryl] & Scarlett heart warming."

Echoing the above sentiment, a second added: "Sorry but I just adore beryl and Scarlett's friendship how cuuute [sic]."

"Oh this is too cute. #ThisMorning," posted a final.

This Morning continues on ITV on weekdays at 10.30am.
