A new Netflix crime thriller, by the mastermind behind The Stranger and Safe, is set to play on one of human's most innate fears: getting lost in the woods.

Landing on the service on Friday, The Woods is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben.

Set in two time spans, the Polish drama follows Warsaw prosecutor, Pawel Kopiński, who is still grieving the loss of his sister who he hasn't seen since her mysterious disappearance 25 years earlier, after she walked into the woods and was never seen again.

It's only when police discover a homicide victim - that of a boy who vanished along with Pawel's sister - with evidence linking it to her disappearance, that the mystery begins to unravel.

"Set in two time spans: 1994 and 2019 The Woods tells the story of a Warsaw prosecutor, Pawel Kopiński, who is still grieving the loss of his sister from twenty five years ago - the night she walked into the woods at a summer camp and was never seen again," says Netflix.

"As hope rises that his sister could still be alive, dangerous secrets from his family's past threaten to tear apart everything that Pawel has been trying to hold together."

Although the adaptation follows the same plot, there are some slight differences in the adaptation, one being it is set in Poland.

Grzegorz Damięcki, Agnieszka Grochowska, Wiktoria Filus and Hubert Miłkowski make up The Woods' main cast, while the drama stars a host of other Polish talent including Jacek Koman, Ewa Skibińska, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Magdalena Czerwińska, Adam Ferency, Przemysław Bluszcz, Dorota Kolak, Izabela Dąbrowska, as well as Piotr Głowacki, Cezary Pazura and Arkadiusz Jakubik.

The Woods is directed by Leszek Dawid and Bartosz Konopka, while Pawel Flis is the director of photography.

The trailer, released last month, shows Pawel telling his story as he explains that back in 1994: "The cap I was a junior instructor at ended tragically.

"Four kids entered the woods and never returned," he says, to a flashback of campers hearing a blood-curdling scream form their beds. "Two bodies were found shortly after. the other two bodies were never found. One of them is my sister's."
