Last night, The Walking Dead broadcast Andrew Lincoln's final scenes as Rick Grimes in the US and fans weren't sure how to react.

Viewers were happy to find out that one of their favourite characters doesn't die but were pretty upset that it still means he'll be leaving the show.

During the episode, Rick accidentally impales himself while trying to distract a wave of zombies away from his friends, but miraculously he manages to pull himself free and jump on his white horse.

Thanks to the blood loss he suffered from being impaled, he spends his entire journey home hallucinating his loved ones, dead and alive.

Rick meets some ghosts from his past, who all tell him to wake up, including Shane (Jon Bernthal), Hershel (Scott Wilson) and Sacha (Sonequa Martin-Green).

Struggling to ride his horse, Rick makes his way to the bridge camp before being saved by Michonne. Except all isn't as it seems.

He finds himself standing on the nearly completed bridge, as the crow of zombies finally catch up to him.

Michonne, Daryl, and the gang show up just in time to witness Rick fire his gun at some dynamite left on the construction site- blowing himself and the zombies up.

This made some viewers believe he had sacrificed himself while blowing up the bridge and that he would be dead.

The episode cuts to a shot of Jadis/Anne, waiting for her helicopter, she then sees Rick collapsed on the bank and rescues him, carrying him off in the helicopter and telling him he's going to be okay.

And that was that, fans were left pretty disappointed with the ending and took to social media to voice their views.

One user wrote: "I'm happy he's not dead right now but I don't know if I can still tune in when he's no longer on the show. I'm so used to Rick's presence that it just doesn't feel right watching this show with him not on it."

Another added: "What do you mean Rick is not dead? I prepared for this. I had to prepare my mind to accept the fact that Rick was going to die only for you to tell me he's f*cking alive? What the hell AMC [sic]?"

A third user seemed to think the show 'nailed it', they wrote: "Guys you nailed it with episode 5 and thankfully Rick didn't die, and Judith killed it [sic]!"
