The first trailer for the highly-anticipated film adaptation of the musical Cats has been released - and it has caused a stir online.

The flick, which is set to hit the UK on Friday, 20th December, features an all-star cast including Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Rebel Wilson and Sir Ian McKellen as the fancy-footed felines.

While Oscar-winner Tom Hooper, who was at the helm of The King's Speech and the film adaptation of Les Misérables, is directing the cinematic musical.

In the new two-minute teaser, fans were given a glimpse of the A-list cast as their CGI human-cat hybrids while Jennifer Hudson, who plays Grizabella the Glamour Cat, hauntingly sings the production's renowned number, 'Memory'.

The trailer has racked up more than 6million views online and the hashtag #Cats quickly became the top tending item on Twitter with fans delivering their verdict on the teaser - and the main feeling was excitement mixed with confusion.

A third wrote: "Very very very unsure how I feel about the new Cats movie after seeing the trailer. Confused? A little excited? Mostly terrified? ????? Will I go see it in theatres??? Probably?????"

Cats is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage adaptation of T.S. Eliot's 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' and debuted on the West End in 1981.

The book, which was published in 1939, is a collection of fantasy poems that each focus on various animals with fascinating backstories.

Inspired by the fiction, the Lloyd-Webber composed musical centres on a night where the 'cats' come together to decide which one will be chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reincarnated.

Cats is scheduled for release on Friday, 20th December.
