Netflix's latest psychological thriller, The Stranger, has been sitting on the streaming site for less than a week, but that hasn't stopped eager fans watching all eight episodes in one gulp.

The series, based on the novel by Harlan Coben, has been receiving rave reviews for its gripping plot line, riddled with twists and turns. Now, viewers who have watched the finale are all wondering if it'll be back for a second season.

The Stranger centres on the life of Adam Price (Richard Armitage) and his picture perfect family setup. But, when an unknown stranger reveals that his wife may have been keeping a dark secret from him, Adam goes on an obsessive quest to discover the truth.

The final scene of the twist-packed thriller, sees detective Johanna Griffin (Siobhan Finneran) standing next to Adam while they watch his son play football. It is six months after the dramatic moment in which Adam tragically discovers his wife's body and shoots her killer, Tripp (Shaun Dooley), to avenge her death.

Adam turns to DS Griffin and asks 'Do you sleep at night?', before it is revealed that she helped him cover up the killing and framed John Katz (Paul Kaye) who had also killed her best friend Heidi (Jennifer Saunders).

She admits that no, she doesn't, but that she does not regret her decision as it meant Adam could remain with his sons, and that the alternative would have been leaving them with one parent dead and another in jail.

Adam replies, acknowledging the irony of the fact that they are hiding the biggest secret of all thanks to being pursued by a woman who believed unearthing secrets was the right thing to do. And that last statement left many fans thinking that a second season was on the cards, as it seems Adam is struggling to deal with framing another man.

"I just finished The Stranger on Netflix, and it was very good. Loved the twists and turns of the story, I do hope there's a second season," tweeted one fan.

"Please @NetflixNL @netflix give us a second season of this," begged another.

"The Stranger on Netflix is fantastic. Brilliantly written, fingers crossed for a second series," concurred a third.

But fans may be disappointed as creator Harlan Coben shut down the idea of a second series when asked by reporters recently.

"It's not our plan. Our plan is to give you one great, great season," the thriller novelist told Radio Times. However, he did admit he'd "never say never", which gives us some hope, right?

The final few episodes of the series' also resolved the central mystery, who is the the stranger and what connects her to the many different lies she is obsessed with unearthing.

We discover that the stranger is Christine Killane (Hannah John-Kamen), a professional blackmailer who considers it her moral duty to expose secrets (though she sometimes gets money out of it too!) But the plot thickens when we discover that Christine is the daughter of Martin Killane (Stephen Rea). Earlier on, viewers find out that Martin had killed his wife - the Stranger's mother.

Another huge twist takes place when we discover Martin isn't Christine's real father; in fact, Ed Price (Anthony Head) is. This makes the Stranger the half-sister of Adam, which is why she decided to expose Corinne's faked pregnancy, and why she didn't demand money from him.

While we can only hope that the creators will change their mind on series two, having binged this series in one it does do a great job of wrapping up the many different questions in a neat way! So, whatever happens, it gets a big thumbs up from us.!

*Crosses all fingers for a second series.*
