BBC One has confirmed that The Split will be coming back to our screens for a third and final series.

The gripping drama, which follows the messy and complicated lives of the three Defoe sisters, will be back at its tangled best for its final chapter as divorce lawyer Hannah (Nicola Walker) has to confront her own marriage split.

The second season left fans devastated after Hannah's once rock-solid marriage to Nathan (played by Stephen Mangan) fell apart entirely after the extent of Hannah's betrayal was revealed to him.

But despite the extent of the split, ten months on and the two professional divorce lawyers seem to be in a good place, respectfully negotiating their separation and seemingly reaching an amicable agreement. As she and Nathan begin to divide up their twenty years together, Hannah faces what she is about to lose.

However, it's not all smooth sailing for the pair, after a shocking revelation dramatically changes the stakes. And, as the battlelines are redrawn, their dream of achieving the "good divorce" is left in tatters.

As always, the final season of The Split will be penned by Bafta and Emmy-award winning writer Abi Morgan, whose previous work includes River, Suffragette and The Hour.

"It's great to be back writing for the Defoe Family, and to dive once more into to the complications of their lives and those of their clients," she said of the new series. "In the final series of this bittersweet trilogy, Hannah faces the heartbreak of her own divorce, and the fight to save her family and her marriage.

"Siblings clash, past mistakes are exposed and hearts are broken as Noble Hale Defoe notches up more billable hours in the divorce capital of the world."

The second series, which averaged over six million viewers and over 19 million streams, became the third most watched drama series on BBC iPlayer in 2020.

And if you feel like you need a refresh of events from the past two series, The Split is available on BBC iPlayer before the third season is released later this year.
