ITV's new drama, The Sister, landed last night (26th October) and fans are already "hooked".

Taking to social media after the first episode of the Neil Cross adaptation aired, viewers said they literally could not wait for the next to drop, despite the fact the show was truly terrifying.

Cross - the creator of Luther - first conceived the series in a book named Burial, which follows a man called Nathan who is haunted by a traumatic incident which happened 10 years ago.

As the show's synopsis says: "One rainy evening, Nathan (Russell Tovey) is surprised by an unwelcome face from the past.

"Nathan has never been able to forget the worst night of his life: a party that led to the sudden, shocking death of a young woman.

"Only he and Bob (Bertie Carvel), an eccentric old acquaintance, know what really happened... and they've resolved to keep it that way.

"But years later, Bob appears at Nathan's door with terrifying news that threatens to tear Nathan's world apart. Because Nathan has his own secrets now.

"Secrets that could destroy everything he has desperately fought to build for himself and his family."

Ooooh errrr...

"I'm hooked after episode 1 of #TheSister Russell Tovey is excellent in the role," wrote one viewer after binging the series.

Meanwhile, another concurred: "First episode in and I'm hooked absolutely brilliant! #TheSister #itv".

"Just finished tonight's #TheSister and I'm hooked! So much so, I'm having to stop myself buying the book...", a third penned.

Elaborating on the storyline, 38-year-old Tovey said: "It's about the unravelling of a good person who made a mistake, or got involved in a situation he shouldn't have been involved in.

"And to commit to that as an actor, when every single scene is a panic attack or anxiety or screaming or crying, and you're in every single scene, it's really tough.

"I feel like, as actors, instinctively you trick your body into feeling these emotions. You're tricking your body into fight or flight and you're doing it over and over and over again."

In last night's episode, Nathan was visited by Bob - who is a paranormal expert who seemed to have strong links to what happened to Elsie.

He turned up with a warning, instructing that her body would need to be moved, seeing as there a plans for a housing department to dig up the woodland.

Bob also seemed shellshocked that Nathan had been married to Holly (Amrita Acharia) for ten years, seeing as she's Elise's sibling.

Viewers are still none-the-wiser what exactly links Nathan, Bob and Elsie, although both men seem to be able to agree that The Sister is haunting them...

Burial - now The Sister - is inspired by a nightmare author Cross has in 1985, about murdering a homeless person.

He recalled to The Radio Times: "I was making my way back to my sister's house, and there was a short cut... through the woods, through these concrete steps through the woods.

"I just woke up the next morning not with any sense that I'd had a dream, of any description, I woke up with a very, very clear memory of coming across a homeless man asleep on the steps who I randomly stabbed to death."

The Sister continues tonight (27 October) on ITV at 9pm.
