We have some sad news for all the '90s kids out there. The Secret Garden is leaving Netflix on Wednesday 1st June - and we're missing it already.

The classic 1993 film was added to Netflix library a year ago on Wednesday 1st July, giving fans a trip down memory lane as well as welcoming new fans into the wonderful world based on the children's novel by Frances Hodges Burnett.

The Secret Garden stars Kate Maberly as Mary Lennox, who is orphaned after an earthquake in India.

It has remained a fan favourite despite being released almost 30 years ago, and has delighted viewers who have sat down and watched Mary as she's sent to England to live with her uncle, Lord Archibald Craven (John Lynch) who is still in inconsolable grief 10 years after his wife passed away.

While Mary is in Yorkshire, she makes lots of discoveries including a mysterious and overgrown garden and after hearing lots of unusual cries during the night, she feels the urge to investigate.

Unfortunately, she is instructed by head of servants Mrs Medlock (played by Dame Maggie Smith) that she must not investigate under any circumstances.

Mary eventually discovers the cries belong to her cousin, Colin (played by Heydon Prowse) who is very sickly and has been instructed to stay in bed and out of sunlight.

She makes a pledge to revive the garden with the help of her new best friend Dickon (Andrew Knott) and once they bring the neglected wilderness back to life, they begin making secret trips with Colin, too.

The revived garden has a rejuvenating effect on Colin and their lives are never the same again.

A remake of The Secret Garden was released in October 2020 (

Fans of the film and the original novel will be pleased to know that a reboot starring Colin Firth as Archibald Craven, was released in October last year. Dixie Egerickx played Mary in the critically acclaimed adaptation.

The 2020 version was produced by Heyday Films and Studiocanal - the team who brought us Paddington and Paddington 2 - whilst the 1993 adaptation was set in the Edwardian era, this time around it has been brought forwards to a new time period in 1947 England, on the eve of Partition with India and in the aftermath of WWII in Britain.

The Secret Garden 2020 can be streamed on Now TV.
