Robert Zemeckis, who is perhaps best known as the director behind Forrest Gump and Back To The Future, has been pegged to write the screenplay and will produce the film alongside Mexican film giants Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Curon.

According to GWW, the new movie will be set during in the American South, specifically Alabama, in 1969.

The filmmaker also told French website Allocine: "We're going to set it in the Gothic South in the 1960s. It's an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of witch story."

Here's the plot synopsis for the remake:

"When his parents are killed, a young boy goes to live with his feisty, loving grandma, who had a terrifying encounter with witches when she was just a girl. When Grandma realizes that the witches have returned, she flees with the Boy to the swankiest resort in the South - only to realize that they've wandered right into a nest of witches, headed by the Grand High Witch, who intends to transform the world's children into mice - starting with the Boy..."

Warner Bros. is also reportedly looking to cast an eight to ten-year-old African-American actor to play the leading role of Luke.

Filming is set to take place in the UK in April and no release date has yet been confirmed. Consider us excited.
