Elisabeth Moss' psychological thriller The Invisible Man was enjoying a successful cinema release when it landed in late February, but its box office takings were cut short due to theatres closing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An an alternative, the movie has been made available to rent on Amazon Prime for the full home cinema experience - and it appears the hype is picking up right where it left off.

A loose modern adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel of the same name, The Invisible Man tells the story of Cecilia Kass - played by Golden Globe-winning The Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss - whose abusive ex-boyfriend commits suicide.

But Cecilia soon realises all is not quite as it seems, when her controlling ex-partner (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) continues to haunt her in terrifying ways.

Cecilia experiences gaslighting as she is forced to question her sanity, as does everyone around her.

The movie took a pleasing $29 million (£22.7 million) for its opening weekend, and it seems people renting at home are still ranking the movie highly, awarding it 3.7 stars out of 5 on the streaming platform.

"Tense from start to finish, and genuinely didn't know which way it was going to go. Great acting as well. Loved it," wrote one on Amazon.

"Great gripping film with amazing twists and turns," another added.

"The invisible man is literally the scariest movie i've ever seen DONT WATCH IT lmao [sic]," one terrified viewer tweeted.

While another added: "Just watched THE INVISIBLE MAN and was seriously the best (also scariest!) movie I've seen in a long time. Highly recommend for quarantine viewing."

The film also stars Aldis Hodge as James, Storm Reid as Sydney, and Amali Golden as Annie, with Harriet Dyer, Benedict Hardie, Sam Smith and Anthony Brandon Wong in supporting roles, while it was directed by Leigh Whannell (Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious).

Speaking to Empire when it was first released, Whannell said: "The idea of a spectre of somebody haunting you, is a great metaphor for one of these relationships where people are scared and traumatised.

"I really just wanted to tell the most nerve-wracking, scariest Invisible Man story I could."

You can currently rent The Invisible Man in HD for £15.99 on Amazon Prime, which is basically what you'd pay for a couple of cinema tickets anyway, right?

Of course it's not quite the same (unless you're lucky enough to have an enormous TV), but we're all making concessions right now. And when the reviews are this good...
