Keira Knightley is no stranger to a good old period drama, and you won't need to wait too long until her next one either - 'The Duchess' actress is set to star in a TV adaption of the award-winning novel The Essex Serpent for Apple TV+.

Not content with just taking a leading role in the series, which is based on Sarah Perry's best-selling 2016 book, the Oscar-nominated actress will also serve as an executive producer.

Set in 1893, The Essex Serpent follows newly-widowed Cora (played by Knightley), who is eager to swap her home in Victorian London for a new life in a small village in Essex after her abusive husband dies.

Here she encounters stories of an eponymous mythical creature which has been rumoured to go around eating sheep and stealing children. This creature, if you hadn't guessed it yet, is know as the Essex Serpent.

The show will be directed by The Selfish Giant's Clio Barnard, with Deep Water's Anna Symon writing, so you know it's going to be a goodie.

With her starring roles in The Duchess and Pride and Prejudice, it's pretty clear that Knightley is most at home in a period drama, so we can't wait to see the results when she's responsible for directing one, too.

Plus, having also recently been cast in Hulu's The Other Typist, there's going to be heaps of the 35-year-old actress on our screens in the coming year - not that we're complaining.

We're actually getting pretty giddy with all the good TV that's coming our way in the near future.

From Netflix' The Haunting of Bly Manor and James McAvoy's new Channel 4 reality show The Bridge to ITV's Des and Love ISLAND star Ovie Soko's upcoming BBC show Life After Reality TV, looks like we're going to be glued to our screens for the rest of the year.

See you in 2021!
