The 31-second trailer illustrates the transition from Claire Foy's "young" Queen to Olivia's middle-aged portrayal of her Majesty - no more so when she refers to herself as an "old bat".

Showing flashes of Foy's Queen before revealing Olivia, 45, in all her glory, one of the Majesty's aids can heard trying to reassure her about her new "profile".

He says: "Everyone is delighted with the new profile ma'am, which they feel is an elegant reflection of her majesty's transition from young woman to...

"Old bat," the acclaimed actress fires, to which her aid insists, "to settled sovereign. Just the tiniest of changes."

Pointing out his pandering tone, she adds stoically: "Great many changes. Nothing one can do about it. One just has to get on with it" while her reflection appears on a picture of her younger years.

The third season of The Crown sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth II and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain.

Netflix's synopsis of the latest instalment adds: "From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age - the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s - Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world."
