HBO's hugely popular documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest followed the lives of mother and daughter duo Gypsie Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard's disturbing and complicated relationship and now their lives will unfold in a brand new series.

The mother-daughter's true crime will come to life in Hulu's new anthology series, The Act, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it's going to be gripping...

According to the online streaming giant, the series is about "a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother," but anyone who's seen the documentary knows it goes a lot deeper than that.

The Act will be based on the true story of Gypsy Rose, who was convicted of murdering her mother, Dee Dee in 2015, however Gypsy claimed her mother made her a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Munchausen syndrome is when a parent or any other form of carer makes up an illness for the person they're taking care of, often for sympathy or financial gain.

Gypsy used this as her defence, claiming her mother held her against her will and forced her to take medications to convince her she was poorly.

According to Meaaw, Dee Dee claimed her daughter had leukemia, epilepsy, hearing loss, sleep apnea, asthma, muscular dystrophy and chromosomal defects. It's also reported Gypsy was forced to use a wheelchair despite the fact she was more than capable of walking, as well as forcing doctors to put a feeding tube in her daughter.

Dee Dee even shaved Gypsy's head to make her look sick, as well as telling people she had the mental capacity of a seven-year-old child.

In The Act, Joey King will take on the role of Gypsy, while Patricia Arquette plays the role of Dee Dee.

The series is set to land on Hulu on 20th March
