Surviving Jeffrey Epstein could be in for a second season after filmmakers have said they're committed to making the documentary series a "continuing story" as it develops.

The four-part special, which aired on Lifetime in the US on Sunday night, premiered after Ghislaine Maxwell's arrest, and as such, it's believed there could be a second instalment to cover her trial which is expected to take place next year.

Filmmakers told ABC News how the documentary was subject to several alterations throughout, due to the constantly developing case.

It's believed the team first had to regroup and make changes when Jeffrey Epstein died in his New York prison cell last August.

Co-producer and co-director Ricki Stern explained: "[His death] opened up the opportunity to say to their interview subjects, 'You don't have to hold anything back. The guy is dead'.

"I think had he not been found dead, there may have been more legal manoeuvring and careful consideration around."

However, as fellow co-producer and co-director Anne Sundberg added: "There was a feeling of real helplessness in the wake of Epstein's death and with all the battles over the settlement of his estate, there was a sense there will never be any clarity or justice.

"To finally have a shot at it [after Maxwell's arrest] is remarkable."

The team had to regroup again when Maxwell was arrested at her home in New Hampshire.

Prosecutors said the 58-year-old tried to flee during her arrest and even "wrapped her phone in foil to avoid surveillance"

"Through a window, the agents saw the defendant ignore the direction to open the door and, instead, try to flee to another room in the house, quickly shutting a door behind her," they said.

Maxwell has been charged with conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and was denied bail last month.

As a result of the arrest, producers had to totally change the fourth episode of the series. While it was intended to be a roundtable with survivors, it was then altered to be an episode dedicated to focusing on the socialite's charges.

As Maxwell's case plays out, executive producer Robert Friedman says they plan "to tell this as a continuing story."

The documentary will arrive in the UK on Tuesday 25th August at 9pm, premiering on Crime+Investigation with a double episode.

According to the channel: "In a TV-first, Surviving Jeffrey Epstein provides a platform for these courageous women to share their stories and harrowing experiences in powerful and compelling testimony, to the story of Epstein's rise to boundless wealth and influence, under cover of which he set up a vast sex trafficking network to not only gratify his own craven appetites, but to extort his rich and powerful allies and ensure they maintained the conspiracy of silence around his deepest, darkest secrets."
