A trailer for the new The Secret Garden dropped this week, giving us our first glimpse of what is to come in the remake of the much-loved 1993 film - so to celebrate the new release we've taken a little trip down memory lane...

The story has actually been adapted several times; it was first made first as a 1919 silent film, then followed by a 1949 drama and finally a 1993 full colour film.

Tbh we're not quite sure how it can possibly be better the '93 version starring Dame Maggie Smith, but we are open to giving it a go.

So here's who you can expect to see in the new cast...

Mrs Medlock

The most well known version featured Maggie as the stern Mrs Medlock, the head housekeeper at Misselthwaite Manor, whilst the new movie scheduled for release on 17th April 2020, will instead cast Julie Walters.

The actress is someone we love almost as much as Maggie, so if anyone has to replace her, we're pretty glad it's her.

She's starred in everything from Harry Potter, to Calendar Girls, Mamma Mia and Billy Elliot.

Archibald Craven

While John Lynch made a great Lord Archibald Craven, we are pretty pleased to see Colin Firth is taking his place.

Despite Colin usually playing easy-going roles in the likes of Bridget Jones' Diary, we have seen him play a more stern character before in The King's Speech, so we know he's got the cross side in him that is needed in this role.

Mary Lennox

The lead character of course is confused, sour and stubborn little Mary Lennox, who in the 1993 film was played by Kate Maberly, who will be replaced by Dixie Egerickx.

How anyone will be able to do a scowl as well as Kate we don't know. Still, Dixie,13, has a few films and TV shows under her belt, from Genius to Little Stranger.

Colin Craven

Playing Mary's cousin, Colin Craven, in the new release will be Edan Hayhurst, who starred alongside Dixie in Genius, but this will be his first feature film.

Dickon

Dickon hasn't been left out of the remake either. The friend to everyone was played by Andrew Knott and is now being followed by Amir Wilson.

Amir has big shoes to fill after Andrew was nominated for Young Artist Award for Best Youth Actor Leading Role in a Motion Picture for his appearance as Dickon.

Laura Crossley

Naturally, Dickon's sister who works as a maid in Misselthwaite features too, with original Laura Crossley now being played by Isis Davis.

Isis has appeared mostly on TV shows and a couple of lesser known films, up to now, but is also a writer. She also won two 2017 British Urban Film Festival awards, she's a real up and coming talent.

It's a big change up for the remake of The Secret Garden, despite both versions being based on the classic children's novel of the same name written by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Whilst the 1993 adaptation was set in the Edwardian era, this time around it has been brought forwards to a new time period in 1947 England, on the eve of Partition with India and in the aftermath of WWII in Britain.

The film is set to be given a magical twist too, if the trailer is anything to go by.

We're not sure how we feel about it having magical powers, given that the premise of the book is all about the garden being kept a secret, but we suppose they had to change it up slightly.

The other major difference of course in the 2020 version is viewers will be able to appreciate sharp colourful graphics, no doubt heightening the beauty of the garden, given that technology has now moved on so far since the earlier versions of the film.

So, you can forget having this adaption on video like the first time around. Oh, the childhood memories.

Marc Munden is the director of the remake and he said of the film: "This is a fantastical reimagining of The Secret Garden."

"It's an opportunity to immerse ourselves in an uncanny and wondrous world, which will play to the imaginations of adults and children alike."

Whatever happens, we can't wait to see Colin and Julie in action.
