Halloween may have shot by in a flash this year, but there's still plenty of screams to be had in 2020.

The fifth film in the Scream franchise has officially wrapped filming, with director Kev Williamson announcing the film's title and release date on Instagram.

And Scream 5 will officially see the franchise go back to its roots, with the new movie to simply be entitled Scream.

"Nearly 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I could not have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans," he wrote. "I'm excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again."

The film sees some of the franchise's biggest stars, including Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Marley Shelton and Neve Campbell, returning for more thrills.

"I'm thrilled to be reunited with Neve, Courteney, David and Marley, and to be working alongside a new filmmaking team and incredible cast of newcomers that have come together to continue Wes Craven's legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the franchise that I hold so dear to my heart," Williamson continued.

"See you in theatres January 2022."

The original four movies, featuring the iconic villain Ghostface killer, were all directed by the late Wes Craven, but after his death in 2015, it was in doubt the series would continue without him.

The first movie, released in 1996, was credited for revitalising the horror genre, which had seen a sharp decline in quality since the 70s.

Inspired by the real-life case of the Gainesville Ripper, Scream aimed to differenciate itself from the tropes typically attributed to the horror genre, and subverting cliches to feel fresh and new.

The plot of the new film is still under wraps, and it looks as if we may have a little while to wait until we find out what's next in store for the cast.
