The series is based on the 1962 novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and focuses on - you guessed it - Nurse Ratched.

And if you're an American Horror Story fan, this one is definitely for you.

The prequel series is set in 1947 and focuses on Mildred Ratched (played by Sarah Paulson) before she became the cold-hearted mental health nurse portrayed in the novel.

As Netflix explain: "The series is set to be an origin story of sorts taking us back to before Nurse Ratched had evolved to the monster by exploiting people in the mental health care system."

The psychological drama sees Mildred arrive in northern California in 1947, looking for employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind.

Although Nurse Ratched portrays herself as everything a professional and dedicated nurse should be, she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it.

As Netflix explain, "Mildred's stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born."

Ever since it landed last week, fans have been taking to Twitter to praise the show.

One person called it the best they'd seen this year, writing: "#Ratched is the best show I've watched this year. Thank you @MsSarahPaulson."

While another added: "Ratched has to be one of the best shows I've watched in a long time. The plot, the acting."

"Ratched is the best f**king show ever god @MsSarahPaulson is such a genius," wrote another.

Meanwhile another person said they binge watched the lot in one day.

"Now what do I do that I've binge watched the incredible show that is Ratched? Started it yesterday at 9am and finished about 6pm. In my top three best shows I've watched in the pandemic. Phenomenal everything," they wrote.

Others meanwhile agreed the creepy show is terrifying, with one writing: "Sarah Paulson is terrifying, I don't think I'll be able to unsee her brilliant Performance in #Ratched."

Speaking to Vanity Fair about Nurse Ratched's character, Sarah previously said: "I identified very deeply with her loneliness. I think ultimately at the end of the day, that is sort of what drives Mildred.

"A pursuit of survival and of finding some sense of home. Even though the methods that she chooses to achieve that internal security are somewhat questionable, I would argue that she's doing them with a potentially selfish need, but a survival need nevertheless.

"Sort of an animal need that blinds her to the inappropriateness of some her actions."
