One of Robin Williams' best friends and neighbours has revealed how the legendary actor visited his home and asked for a hug on the night of his death.

In new documentary, Robin's Wish, Jon Hepper - who lived down the road from the actor - revealed how Robin had visited his home on 11th August 2014, just hours before he tragically took his own life.

Speaking to Tyla, director of Robin's Wish, Tylor Norwood explained how he had chatted to Jon for the documentary.

"Jon Hepper lived just down the street and Robin loved him," said Tylor.

"In the interview, for the first time, he revealed that Robin came over the night he died and asked for a hug. They had a long conversation about life and the difficulties he was going through.

"Without this project, we would never know this story, and we would never have access to where Robin was that night.

"He wasn't going out of the world angry and raging about his circumstance, he was actually saying, I really wish this wasn't happening, I would love a hug from my best friend, I don't know how to proceed, I'm feeling really lost.

"It was so honest. After that interview I had a real sense of their relationship and Jon's fatherly role with Robin. They had this sort of letting go where Jon knew as he was walking away - having walked his dog Leonard for the last time - that it might be the last time he saw him.

"Those moments really sit with you in terms of trying to get inside of Robin's head because we can never know what he was going through, but moments like that give you a window."

The documentary - which was released last week - delves into the truth behind the final months of Robin's life. For the first time, the film investigates Robin's agonising battle against the deadly neurodegenerative disorder, Lewy Body Dementia, which left him experiencing anxiety, paranoia, insomnia and terrifying altered realities.

It was only after Robin's death that the truth behind the actor's horrifying symptoms were revealed. Upon autopsy, doctors found Robin - who was aged 63 - was suffering with one of the worst cases of diffuse Lewy body dementia they had ever seen.

The disease is a type of progressive dementia that can cause hallucinations, confusion, problems with understanding and disturbed sleep, due to abnormal microscopic deposits that damage brain cells.

During the documentary, viewers hear from 17 of Robin's friends and family, who have never previously spoken about what happened before.

Alongside Robin's wife Susan Schneider Williams - who first approached Tylor with the idea of telling her husband's story - the film also hears from close friends such as comedy legends Mort Sahl, Rick Overton and Michael Pritchard as well as Night at The Museum director Shawn Levy and The Crazy Ones creator David E. Kelley.

"The movie for me was really about just how fragile we all are. We hear from scientists in the film say numerous times that LBD really could have happened to anyone, it's no different to heart disease or cancer, it could happen to us all and quickly... Susan really empowered me to be the owner of this story and do it justice and get it into the world," explained Tylor.

Robin's Wish is now available to watch on demand via YouTube and Amazon Prime Video.
