Riverdale fans have patiently waited for the show's return since the fourth season wrapped in May last year. Season 4 was cut short due to the production shut down, caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

As a result of the abbreviated fourth season - and all the drama of course - fans are eager to see where Archie and the gang are in their lives when we return to the mysterious town of Riverdale for season 5.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic impacted Riverdale season 5?

The show officially shut down production back in March after a team member came into contact with somebody who had tested positive for Covid-19.

For this reason, Season 4 was forced to be made shorter, which now means Season 5 will be extra long, beginning with essentially the last few episodes of Season 4.

What will season 5 be about?

When the show returns, fans will get to see the group's graduation and their prom as they leave Riverdale High, before shooting forward seven years into the future.

You can watch the trailer below:

Speaking about the new season during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lili Reinhart (who plays Betty Cooper) said: "We're actually doing a seven-year time jump into the future so we're not going to be teenagers anymore.

"I'm really psyched about it. I think it will be really nice to play an adult."

The show's creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa gave fans a sneak peek of the new season which featured KJ Apa shirtless (I mean, would you expect anything else?!)

Who is returning?

All the main cast are expected to return including the characters Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)

Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz, revealed her real-life pregnancy is being written into the show although she did not share more details about what's to come for the her character or her character's baby! We're intrigued.

In February, it was announced that Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols would not be returning to the show for season five.

On 15th October, Skeet announced that it was his last day on set, posting the following on Instagram. "Goodbye Riverdale...thank you for introducing me to some lifelong friendships and so many beautiful souls. Today is my last day on set but the experience will never leave my heart," he wrote.

Will there be steamy scenes?

Yes. Don't worry Riverdale fans, the cast and crew know you love to see the characters will have lots of make-out scenes, while the actors remain safe and follow protocols. KJ Apa even took to Instagram to reassure fans. He captioned a video of him and his on-screen love interest Camila Mendes gargling mouthwash and said: "Our new normal is washing our mouths before every take of a make-out scene..."

When does season 5 it premiere?

Production for the new season began in August last year and The CW confirmed that the show will be back on 20th January 2021.

Fans in the UK will be pleased to hear that they won't have to wait long to catch up on all the drama, Netflix UK & Ireland announced that season 5 will drop the next day - 21st January 2021.
