Riverdale fans, assemble! A fifth season of the Archie Comic drama has just been announced and is thought to be arriving on Netflix later this year.

Despite fans of the show fretting that it wouldn't return after the fourth instalment, it has now been confirmed that The CW television network has answered our telly prayers and renewed Riverdale for another season.

The news was announced on Twitter last night, with the official Riverdale account tweeting: "This town never runs out of mysteries. #Riverdale has been renewed for Season 5!"

The Netflix Life Twitter account also confirmed the news and said the fifth instalment is "officially happening".

With the three previous seasons of the show airing in October, fans think the next series could arrive in October this year.

While The CW network has not released a date, or indicated how many episodes the new series will have, it's thought there will be at least 22 for us to get stuck into.

Episodes will air on The CW in the US, before hitting Netflix the next day.

The good news was confirmed last night by The CW television network (

The fourth season of the teen drama started being aired on Netflix back in October and is having a mid-season hiatus right now until the end of January where it will pick back up again.

Betty, Archie, Jughead, Veronica, and Cheryl, are high school seniors in the fourth instalment, so it's thought season five could follow the gang after graduation and into college.

KJ Apa and Camila Mendes are expected to return (

While it's not yet clear who will be in the fifth season, there'll likely be some new faces in the small town although it's thought main characters Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) will return, although it is unknown about Jughead Jones' (Cole Sprouse) fate given the flash forward in season four.

Fans of the show have been celebrating the news on Twitter - and it's VERY clear what they want to see in season five.

Fans are begging for a 'Bughead' wedding (

Many took to social media to beg the show for a Bughead (aka Jugehead and Betty) wedding in the next series.

One wrote: "Betty and Jughead better get married in season 5" while another said it had "better happen".

We've got everything crossed...
