Dark drama Ratched has been impressing viewers since its launch last month and now, Netflix has revealed the show is its most watched original series of the year.

The streaming platform revealed the news on Thursday, telling fans the Sarah Paulson starring series had become its biggest streamed of 2020.

"In its first 28 days, 48 million members have booked an appointment with Nurse Ratched, making it our biggest original Season 1 of the year," Netflix wrote on Twitter

The series is based on the 1962 novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and focuses on Nurse Ratched, played by Paulson.

The prequel is set in 1947 and focuses on Mildred Ratched before she became the cold-hearted mental health nurse portrayed in the novel.

As Netflix explain: "The series is set to be an origin story of sorts taking us back to before Nurse Ratched had evolved to the monster by exploiting people in the mental health care system."

The psychological drama sees Mildred arrive in northern California in 1947, looking for employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind.

Although Nurse Ratched portrays herself as everything a professional and dedicated nurse should be, she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it.

As Netflix explains: "Mildred's stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born."

Ever since it landed, fans have been raving about the new drama with many calling it the best they've watched this year.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about Nurse Ratched's character, Sarah previously said: "I identified very deeply with her loneliness. I think ultimately at the end of the day, that is sort of what drives Mildred.

"A pursuit of survival and of finding some sense of home. Even though the methods that she chooses to achieve that internal security are somewhat questionable, I would argue that she's doing them with a potentially selfish need, but a survival need nevertheless.

"Sort of an animal need that blinds her to the inappropriateness of some her actions."
