A Percy Jackson series is officially coming to Disney+, based on the much loved Rick Riordan books.

For those who aren't familiar, the novels centre around Perseus 'Percy' Jackson, who lives a pretty bog standard life until he finds out he's actually Greek God, Poseidon.

The first book, The Lightening Thief (2005) details the moment he discovers he's the God of the seas.

Meanwhile, after that The Sea Of Monsters (2006), The Titan's Curse (2007), The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008) and The Last Olympian (2009) follow his many adventures and godly missions.

While we've already had movie versions of the first two novels, Rick Riordan dropped the exciting news that a full-on series was coming on Twitter, in a beaming video alongside his wife.

"Pssst. Hey, demigods," he teased, before spilling the news.

It was followed by a statement, which said: "We can't say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one.

"Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show."

Eeeek!

Taking to the comments as the pair announced the news, one rather enthusiastic fan wrote: "THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OF THE YEAR, THANK YOU UNCLE RICK. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR A DECADE."

While another added: "FINALLY!!!!!! Ugh 6th grade me is sooooooooo happy right now!".

And Percy Jackson movie actor Logan Lerman even had his say, replying: "Excited to see this! Hope it gets the adaptation the books deserve. Congrats @rickriordan".

While the pair didn't give away any more about what we could expect, their comments certainly seem to indicate there could be as many as five seasons to look forward to.

That is, unless Disney plan to merge some of the novels together? We guess we'll just have to wait and see!

The series is currently still in very early development, so there are no updates on cast, filming schedule or release date yet.

But we're keeping our eyes out and we'll let you know when we know more!
