We're just about recovering from the news that season 6 of Peaky Blinders will be the last (sob), but now the show's creator has officially confirmed a film is on the way.

Honestly, our emotions are all over the place RN.

While there have been murmurs of a possible Peaky film for a while now, the biggest hint came yesterday, when Steven Knight, the show's writer, released a statement promising the show would be back "in another form". Mysterious...

Now, he's elaborated to Deadline, all but confirming that Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and the gang are going to be hitting big screen.

"Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie," he told the publication. "That is what is going to happen."

It was originally thought that the BBC and Netflix drama would run up until season seven, but due to delays from the Covid-19 pandemic, plans have now changed.

It comes as Season 6 began filming on Monday, just short of a year after it was meant to.

Fans were first alerted to the news after spotting a picture, posted on the official Instagram page for the BBC gangster show, which showed actor Cillian Murphy getting his hair cut into Tommy Shelby's famous short-sided style once more.

And then not long afterwards the production company confirmed the news themselves, adding that it would be the last series on TV.

Tommy Bulfin, Executive Producer for the BBC, said: "We are very excited that filming for Peaky Blinders has begun and so grateful to everyone for all their hard work to make it happen. Steve's scripts for series six are truly remarkable and provide a fitting send-off which we are sure will delight fans."

While Knight chipped in: "Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

"We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form."

There has been chatter about a Peaky Blinders film for many years now, with former director Otto Bathurst teasing back in 2018 that a script was already in the works.

In an interview with Yahoo Movies, he said: "I think it's actually being written. I think Steve, Steve Knight the writer, I think they're planning something, yeah."

Meanwhile, speaking LADBible a year later in 2019, Knight teased his plans for a future movie, adding: "I think there's something about Peaky where it's a world, lots of people have different interpretations of that world, so I'm all for keeping the spirit going [once the TV show ends]."

Suddenly the end of Peaky as we know it doesn't seem so bad. Bring on Tommy in cinematic HD!
