If there's been a big Paul Mescal-shaped hole in your life since Normal People finished earlier this year then you're not alone. But the wait is almost over as the Irish actor's new Channel 5 drama The Deceived starts this Monday and if this trailer is anything to go by, it looks set to be our new summer viewing obsession.

Filmed around England and Ireland and written by Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, Paul will be returning to our screens (sans chain) as local builder Sean, starring alongside Emily Reid and Peaky Blinders star Emmet J. Scanlan, who play Cambridge University student Orphelia and married lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan respectively.

Sadly Paul takes a bit of backseat in the four-part drama, which follows Orphelia's affair with Michael, ending in heartbreak when the sneaky professor suddenly disappears.

Without giving too much away, Orphelia tracks him down in Knockdara in Donegal before chaos ensues when Michael's wife Roisin mysteriously dies in a house fire. It's here she meets Sean, who helps her find out what's going on.

Always the gentleman.

Speaking about the role, Paul said: "I had two days off after I wrapped filming on Normal People and then I started filming The Deceived. This is my second ever TV role. As for whether I was nervous...? Totally.

"I don't have enough experience to feel completely comfortable stepping onto set but everybody was so welcoming and kind on this show.

"The nerves were very much present when I stepped on set on my first day for The Deceived. But I'd be worried if that feeling wasn't present because I don't think nerves are necessarily a bad thing."

The Deceived will also touch on gas lighting and abuse, with Paul adding: "It's great to be a part of something that is showing this because to be honest I imagine the situation in this drama is a common occurrence, unfortunately.

Paul is on a bit of a roll right now, and earlier this week nabbed himself an Emmy nomination for lead actor in a limited series for his role as Connor in Normal People.

Shockingly his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones was overlooked for her role of Marianne, and we're still fuming, tbh.

The Deceived airs Monday 3rd August at 9pm on Channel 5
