Paul Knops has revealed that the reason he split from fellow Islander Laura Anderson, was because 'he was looking for a wife', and the pair weren't compatible.
The couple split in September, just two months after leaving the villa, and after remaining silent for weeks, Paul has now decided to reveal why the pair parted ways.
Paul revealed that Laura cried when he told her it was over because they were not compatible, and that the pair have not stayed friends.
The 31-year-old claims he has not spoken out about the split until now as he wanted to give Laura time to move on.
However, after suffering backlash from Love Island fans who said he used Laura for a chance to win the show, Paul decided to reveal every detail of the pair's break-up.
He said: "It was my decision to split from Laura - I said to her let's make it a mutual decision so we could both move on and she didn't get hurt.
"We weren't compatible for each other. I knew I had to be 100 per cent sure about it because you know - the next person you're with could potentially be your wife; you don't want to be unsure about it.
"We weren't right for each other and that's why we never made things official.
"Of course she was upset; there were tears. Obviously it isn't nice when someone says they don't want to be with you.
"We aren't friends now - we haven't spoken, it is a sore subject. But I told her I would be there for her if she needed me.
"People blamed me of using her. How did I use her? We went on the same reality show. Laura wouldn't have come second without me and vice versa. I'm not that kind of person.
"I tried not to read negative comments but sadly you have a hundred positive and you can't ignore the negatives."
Shortly after the pairs split was announced, Laura spoke about Paul and why their relationship didn't work.
She said the split was due to their conflicting work schedules and Paul's lack of effort to see or speak to her.
In September, Laura said: "When we came out of the villa there was a lot of work related things we did together and then Paul went away for three weeks.
"He went to the Burning Man festival in America and he couldn't get phone signal for a week. I was absolutely fine with that.
"I trusted him not to do things with other girls, which he didn't.
"I was hoping that when he came back we'd spend more time together and build a proper relationship out of the villa. It didn't happen.
"I don't really want to see what he's up to now because I'm not involved in that.
"You have a little look now and again and it torments you!"
