Many of us gulped down BBC's hit series Normal People in one go when it landed on iPlayer last month. Captivated by the complex love story between Connell and Marianne, fans have been praying for a second series.

And while the Sally Rooney novel it's based on doesn't have a sequel (sob), Daisy Edgar-Jones has just given the strongest indication yet that a second season could be on the cards.

Earlier this week, a source told The Mirror: "The BBC are desperate to get going on series two. The viewing numbers are huge and they want more of the same."

And it seems the cast are in agreement, with 21-year-old Daisy speculating on what might become of the star-crossed lovers at the centre of the novel, Marianne and Connell.

As fans will remember, the series dramatically ended with Connell preparing to move to New York for a writing course, with Marianne encouraging him to follow his dreams.

Appearing on The One Show, the actress said she hopes the pair remain "settled and happy" and that Connell continues to write in New York.

"I hope that they remain that level of settled and happy that they get to by the end of the series," she said.

"It's wonderful that Marianne enables him to follow his dream as a writer in New York, so I really hope he sticks at it and carries on doing what he loves."

Daisy added: "I kind of imagine that she moves in with Lorraine [Connell's mum] and they have quite a happy, little life together!"

Given the enormous success of Normal People, it would only seem right for BBC to instantly commission a second series, right?

Interestingly, director Lenny Abrahamson told Radio Times he hopes to revisit the characters in a decade's time.

"I have a fantasy of doing a [...] seeing where they are in ten years' time sort of thing, if I'm not too decrepit at that point," he said.

However, the director and producers who worked on Normal People have already turned their attentions to something equally as exiting.

BBC are working on another adaptation - this time of Rooney's first novel, Conversations with Friends.

It tells the story of Frances and Bobbi, two college students studying in Dublin. They used to be lovers, but have remained close since their breakup, working the city's literary circuit as spoken word performers.

When they are interviewed and then befriended by well-known journalist Melissa, who is married to Nick, an actor, they are thrust into a glamorous world of rubbing shoulders with actors and holidays in Provence. Things become even more complex when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer.

The series will, again, be produced with Element Pictures and made in partnership with Hulu for BBC Three.

If we aren't getting a Normal People series 2 any time soon, this makes a great alternative.
