Normal People's Daisy Edgar Jones has bagged the lead role of Kya in the new film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing.

Based on Delia Owens' New York Times bestselling novel, the film will take place in the mid-20th century South, depicting Kya as a young woman who has been left to raise herself on her own in the wild marshes near her town, after her family disown her.

Directed by Olivia Newman and written by the Oscar-nominated Lucy Alibar, the story starts by showing how Kya learns to survive without her mother and siblings - teaching herself to read and cook - but it soon takes a dramatic turn when her ex boyfriend is found dead, and locals and police decide that she's the prime suspect.

The film is being produced under Reese Witherspoon's label, Hello Sunshine, and the Legally Blonde star will also be acting as a producer, alongside Lauren Neustadter.

Elizabeth Gabler, Erin Siminoff and Aislinn Dunster are also working on the project for 3000 Pictures.

Fans will recognise Daisy from her role as Marianne Sheridan in BBC and Hulu's Normal People, where she starred alongside Paul Mescal, who played Connell Waldren.

The show - based on Sally Rooney's debut novel - broke streaming records for BBC Three, and became somewhat of a sensation when it aired, thanks as much to its stellar acting and relatable storyline as its steamy moments.

'Normal People' aired earlier this year on BBC (

It followed Connell and Marianne's romance from the end of secondary school to their time together as undergraduates at Trinity College Dublin, as they grew into adults.

Daisy is also soon set to star in Legendary thriller Fresh - a film that is currently keeping its storyline firmly under wraps.
