Normal People has been a major success with fans and critics alike with many applauding the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel for its (often painful) dealing with the complexities of first love through the characters of Connell and Marianne.

But did you know that the Irish author published a novel before Normal People? And, more excitingly, did you know it's also being made into a TV series?

Yes, a year before Normal People hit bookshelves in 2018, Rooney burst onto the literary scene with her debut novel, Conversations With Friends.

The stunning debut became critically-acclaimed, and the BBC are already working on its small screen adaptation. Eek!

Conversations With Friends tells the story of Frances and Bobbi, two college students studying in Dublin. They used to be lovers, but have remained close since their breakup, working the city's literary circuit as spoken word performers.

When they are interviewed and then befriended by well-known journalist Melissa, who is married to Nick, an actor, they become embroiled in a complex ménage-à-quatre and thrust into a world of rubbing shoulders with actors and holidays in Provence.

However, things get even more complex when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer.

While there's no word on casting yet, we know the series will be directed by Oscar-nominated Irish film director Lenny Abrahamson, and a number of episodes will be written by Alice Birch, who worked on Normal People.

The series will, again, be produced with Element Pictures and made in partnership with Hulu for BBC Three.

The 29-year-old novelist, said: "I am so pleased to be working with the team at Element, Lenny Abrahamson and the BBC to produce an adaptation of Conversations With Friends.

"I'm confident we're going to find fresh and interesting ways of dramatising the novel's dynamics, and I'm excited to watch the process take shape‎."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, added: "We are all addicted to Sally Rooney's writing and will plunder her literary canon as long as she is writing.

"And so, on the back of the taut and tangled Normal People we are delighted that Sally has entrusted us, and the wonderfully talented people at Element Pictures, with her debut novel Conversations With Friends."

We'll keep you in the loop on casting and release dates when we have them, but in the mean time, there's enough to get super excited!
