Netflix series You returned last week for a second instalment, and fans of the show have been left on tenterhooks as Joe/Will appeared to be slipping into his old stalking habits in the season finale.

Eagle-eyed viewers, who managed to binge through all 10-episodes since it's release on the streaming service on Thursday, are convinced that they know who his next target is.

In the final moments of the nail-biting finale, Joe - who has journeyed out of Los Angeles with girlfriend Love - is seen spying on his next victim...or what looks like it at least.

Slowly creeping behind his garden fence, the bookstore owner with an impulse to kill says he'll be seeing his new neighbour "soon" as viewers suddenly notice a woman reading a book on a sun lounger.

And now fans of the show have taken to social media to say that the object of Joe's stalking isn't a love interest but rather his estranged mother, who viewers saw a lot of through flashbacks in this series.

One fan penned: "As an aside - having now finished Season 2 of @YouNetflix last night, am I alone in thinking the neighbour at the end might be Joe's mother? #YouNetflix".

"Am I the only who think that the woman at the ending of You season 2 is Joe's mother..? Heh," another shared.

A third wrote: "Hear me out i feel like the neighbour is actually his mom #YouOnNetflix #YOUSEASON2".

"The girl at the end of You is his mom, I'm calling it. #YouOnNetflix," a fan added.

The theory is plausible as Joe never actually told Love whether his mother was dead or alive...

The social media buzz comes after Penn Badgley, who plays Joe Goldberg/Will Bettelheim, accidentally confirmed that a third series is in the works.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the actor appeared to let the cat out of the bag when discussing a massive twist which happened at the very end of the second series.

Discussing the moment Love proved her alliance to boyfriend Will by killing his ex Candace, Joe said: "She doesn't appear to be the same kind of person. She doesn't appear to be the same kind of predator.

"She doesn't appear to be the same kind of... you know, dare I say, in the third season - oh, god!"

Realising what he'd said, Penn then put his head in his hands, while interviewer Lauren Zima quizzed him on what he'd just said.

Backtracking, he said: "I literally know nothing about a third season".

"Are we going to get a third season?," Lauren pushed. To which he replied: "Technically I can't... I mean, like, unofficially?" before nodding his head suggestively.

We can't wait to see how this storyline plays out so...
