There's a harrowing documentary coming to Netflix this week, delving into the Watts family murders.

The true crime, American Murder: The Family Next Door, focuses on 34-year-old Shanann Watts who disappeared along with her two young daughters in August 2018.

Shannan - who was pregnant at the time - went missing from Frederick, Colorado, on the evening of 13th August, with her friend reporting the disappearance after she was unable to contact her the following day. You can watch the trailer below:

"I dropped her off at her house at two in the morning last night and I haven't heard been able to get a hold of her this morning," says the friend.

"I've gone to her house and her car is there. She won't answer phone calls, she won't answer text messages."

As seen in the clip, Shanann's husband, Chris Watts, takes on the role of a concerned and bereft father and husband.

But behind the facade, Watts was responsible for the murder of his entire family. He brutally killed Shanann, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste before hiding their bodies in an oil tank.

In a sick twist, Watts even appeared on camera appealing for the safe return of his family (

In a sick twist, Watts even appeared on camera appealing for the safe return of his family. But his lies unravelled when he failed a lie detector test just two days after their disappearance.

Shortly before the test took place, an officer can be heard saying: "There's only one person in this room that knows what the truth is... In about five minutes, there's gonna be two of us."

Watts initially told the police he had murdered Shanann after he found out she had killed Bella and Celeste. It was only later that he admitted he was responsible for all three deaths, having strangled his wife and also smothered his daughters.

In November 2018, he was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences (

In November 2018, he was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences. He will not have the possibility of parole.

Giving voice to the victims, the documentary film is told entirely through archival footage that includes social media posts, law enforcement recordings, text messages and never-before-seen home videos.

American Murder: The Family Next Door will arrive on Netflix on Wednesday 30th September.
