It's the news we've been waiting months for - Riverdale Season 5 has just been given a release date and it's just a few months away.

Netflix revealed the news on Tuesday afternoon, updating followers with a few important telly dates for their diaries.

And right at the bottom of the list was the new Riverdale - coming to us on 21st January 2021!

Back in August, the Riverdale crew re-started production on the series after a brief delay due to the pandemic.

The show officially shut down production back in March after a team member came into contact with somebody who had tested positive for Covid-19.

For this reason, Season 4 was forced to be made shorter, which now means Season 5 will be extra long, beginning with essentially the last few episodes of Season 4.

It'll show the group's graduation and their prom as they leave Riverdale High, before shooting forward seven years into the future.

Speaking about the new season during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lili Reinhart (who plays Betty Cooper) said: "We're actually doing a seven-year time jump into the future so we're not going to be teenagers anymore.

"I'm really psyched about it. I think it will be really nice to play an adult."

Fans know exactly what they want from Season 5, with many taking to social media to beg the show for a Bughead (aka Jugehead and Betty) wedding in the next series.

One wrote: "Betty and Jughead better get married in season 5" while another said it had "better happen".

While it's not yet confirmed who will return to star in the fifth instalment, it's thought main characters Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) will all return.

This date is marked firmly in our diaries!
