Netflix has released the first look trailer for its upcoming film Pieces of a Woman, and it looks set to be a difficult watch.

The new release, out on 7th January, stars Vanessa Kirby and Shia LeBeouf. The pair play a Boston couple Martha and Sean Carson that decide to have a home birth after Martha falls pregnant.

However, things don't go the way as intended, with the deeply personal story resulting in an unthinkable tragedy.

Legendary director Martin Scorsese serves as producer on the film, which then follows the couple as they struggle to come to terms as to why this happened to their baby.

The trailer sees the pair attend tense meetings and face difficulties as their flustered midwife faces (played by Molly Parker) charges of criminal negligence. Naturally, the story captures local interest with the entire city of Boston wanting to see the midwife punished.

The news launches Martha on a year-long journey where she then has to face up to her grief while navigating a freshly fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn) as she prepares to go to court.

It's set to be a hugely powerful watch, with The Crown star Vanessa Kirby's performance described as "career-defining" in an early review by Vanity Fair.

Pieces of a Woman marks the English-language debut by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, overseeing how one couple is completely torn apart by the death of their child.

The film will also have a limited theatrical run to tie in with the festive season, released in some cinemas on December 30th.

And it's already tipped for Oscar's glory, with Vanessa winning Best Actress at Venice Film Festival.

Vanessa previously played the vivacious Princess Margaret in the first two series of Netflix epic The Crown. She is also known for roles in action fils such as Mission Impossible: Fallout and Hobbs & Shaw.
