This looks so dark.

When it comes to true crime, Netflix doesn't mess about. It brought us Making A Murderer, The Staircase and Abducted In Plain Sight, after all.

And the latest offering, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, looks as gripping as ever.

After much anticipation, the three-part-series has landed on the streaming platform today, and will centre around the heartbreaking and tragic story of sport star Aaron Hernandez, who was arrested in 2013 for the murder of semi-professional footballer Odin Lloyd.

Lloyd was dating Hernandez's fiancee's sister, and the film will aim to explain all the theories as to why he killed him, and went on to subsequently cover up his death.

The true crime series covers all bases, featuring exclusive courtroom footage from his trial as well as his phone calls from prison and interviews with those who knew him.

At the time of the crime, the American footballer, who had been drafted into the NFL at 20, had just signed a five-year, $40 million (nearly £31million) contract with the New England Patriots.

In 2015, Hernandez was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder, as well as five weapon charges, which required a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for Lloyd's death.

Two years later, the 27-year-old took his own life in his prison cell, days after being acquitted of the 2012 double homicide of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, a separate double-murder case he was also tried for.

At the time of his death, a judge threw out Hernandez's conviction, citing the legal principle that if a defendant convicted at trial dies before an appeal is heard, they should no longer be considered guilty.

However, the prosecution then appealed, and Massachusetts' highest court reinstated his murder conviction in March.

This sure sounds like a chilling watch.
