Mindhunter fans have been waiting over two years for the crime thriller to return to Netflix, and today is finally the day.

After a gripping first season in 2017, which showed FBI agent Holden Ford, Bill Tench and psychologist Dr Wendy Carr explore the minds of some of the most dangerous serial killers, we've been on the edge of our seats in anticipation for their next mission. The second season - which arrived on Netflix UK at 8am BST on August 16 and is comprised of eight episodes - sounds even more sinister than the first.

It's set between the years 1979 and 1981 - two years after the first - and will explore the infamous Atlanta Child Murders in which at least 28 African-American children, teens and adults were brutally killed in Atlanta, Georgia.

The cast will also take a look at cult leader Charles Manson, who convinced his followers to commit a series of nine murders at four locations around the same time.

Plus, they'll tackle New York serial killer David Berkowitz, known as Son of Sam, who pled guilty to eight separate shooting attacks during the summer of 1976, and the BTK killer Dennis Rader, who murdered ten people in Kansas between 1974 and 1991 and sent taunting letters.

As well as delving into the crimes of killers, Tench, Ford and Carr also grapple with their own day to day lives and personal struggles.

At the end of season one, Ford's job was on the line after he was caught lying to FBI big-wigs, and his relationship with girlfriend Debbie was also basically over.

Serial killer Ed Kemper also got under the agent's skin, creepily hugging him from his hospital bed and causing him to have a panic attack.

If it loosely follows real life like the first season, the second installment is set to be dramatic as ever, seeing as John Douglas (who wrote the original book, and who Ford is based on) famously got in trouble for his handling of the Atlanta Child Murders.

We've already seen Ford's questionable methods of drawing the truth out of murderers, and it's likely this will only continue further as he tackles Wayne Williams, who was convicted of two murderers in the famous case.

You can stream the whole of Mindhunter season two now.
