In exciting TV news that we've definitely been waiting for, it's been confirmed that former Grey's Anatomy star Dr Derek Shepherd - aka McDreamy - will be back for more episodes, by none other than the medical TV programme's showrunner Krista Vernoff.

It was one of the saddest moments ever in TV deaths when McDreamy (played by Patrick Dempsey) was killed off in season 11 after being hit by a truck. The heartbreaking scenes left loyal fans and his on-screen partner Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) devastated.

But in a huge twist aired just last month, eager fans of the medical drama were treated to a reunion between McDreamy and Meredith. And now it seems that there is more to come, with fans able to look forward to deeper conversations between the two characters in season 17.

In scenes that aired in November, the late McDreamy appeared in a dream sequence after Meredith collapsed outside the hospital. While she remained unconscious, Derek visited Meredith in her subconscious and the former couple walked alongside each other on a nondescript beach. It was everything that viewers could have hoped for.

Krista Vernoff said at the time that bringing McDreamy back was a way to give something back to the viewers.

"It happened because it was my job to find a way - once we determined that we were doing the pandemic - to also bring joy and escape, and fan candy and all the things that at Grey's Anatomy we give people," she said.

Now, in an interview with Deadline, Vernoff has revealed that Derek will be back again, in scenes that we definitely can't wait for.

Asked whether fans would get to see longer conversations between the two characters and if they would get closer like Meredith and other returnee George, Vernoff said: "Yes, eventually. Eventually they'll get to have deeper, richer conversations as Meredith and George did.

"We worked with Patrick for two days," Vernoff goes on to explain. "We had two days to capture four episodes, and so that's why you're not getting the full meal in one episode.

"You want more, tune in. It's like you had a little taste before dinner and come back for dessert."

Sounds great!

Viewers also saw the return of George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) in last night's episode (

This is not the only reunion to happen in this season of the show. In last night's episode, viewers also saw the return of George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), with Meredith able to tell her friend how much he meant to her.

"You changed my life George," she said.

We hope more reunions are on the cards!
