Marcella fans have been waiting for what feels like a lifetime (and was actually two years) for the crime drama to return to TV screens.

And finally, season 3 dropped on ITV last night, offering everyone a double bill of action to reward them for their patience.

It certainly can't be denied that people were feeling the series, with many tweeting immediately that they were "gripped" and "hooked" on all Anna Friel's antics already.

However, there was one common theme as people took to social media: no matter how much they loved the show, barely anybody seemed to have a clue what was going on.

Ah Marcella, as chaotic as ever...

*Prepare yourself for some major Marcella spoilers below*

In case you need a refresher, Marcella season 2 crashed to an end showing Marcella faking her own death and then moving to Belfast under the alias of Keira Devlin, to start a new mission as an undercover police officer.

And season 3 wasted no time getting dramatic, as it started 10 months in with the newly blonde cop witnessing her new beau Lawrence (Paul Kennedy) being killed at a country house.

Marcella had been working undercover investigating organised crime family, the Maguires, of which Lawrence was a member.

But he was also her informant, and had clearly fallen in love with her - helping her investigation in the process.

While this might all sound romantic, we soon learn that the feelings weren't reciprocated, and - what's more - it was Marcella who mentioned to Lawrence's family that he was meddling with the accounts and stealing from them.

Marcella didn't get permission from her handler to do this either, nor does she inform a frustrated Frank when he asks if there was anything she could have done to save her beau.

Got it? Well, some people haven't....

"If anyone can assist me and tell me what's happening in #marcella I would be eternally grateful. I'm so confused," one person wrote after binging the two episodes.

Meanwhile, another penned: "#Marcella wow I am so confused as to what is going on but it's gripping".

A third chipped in: "No ITV drama ever makes me so confused like this one #Marcella".

The eight-part series sees Anna starring alongside Hugo Speer and Amanda Burton, whilst Ray Panthaki also returns.

Newbie Amanda Burton will be taking up the role of Katherine in the series - the 'matriarch of the Maguire family'.

Meanwhile, Aaron McCusker is playing her son, Finn Maguire, and Hugo Speer is returning as Frank Young, Marcella's handler.

We can also expect to see Kelly Gough joins the cast as Stacey, Katherine's daughter, as Martin McCann plays Stacey's husband, Eugene O'Hare stars as local police officer Eddie; Michael Colgan plays Rory Maguire and Glen Wallace is Matt, a past acquaintance.

ITV has previously teased that, as the series goes on, we'll be led to question how much of good-cop Marcella remains, and how much her new identity, Kiera, has taken over.

As with the first two seasons, the new instalment of the show is by Swedish writer and director Hans Rosenfeldt, who also created hit show The Bridge.

Confusing or not, we'll be glued to our seats for the next episode.
