After Mary Bedford and Aaron Simpson were dumped from Love Island last week, we thought, 'could this be the beginning of something beautiful?'

But alas it appears our excitement was premature after 22-year-old Mary put footballer Aaron, 24, firmly into the friendzone on Sunday night's Love Island: Aftersun.

The couple struck up a romance after Toby Aromolaran ditched Mary to recouple with Chloe Burrows following an eventful turn in Casa Amor, and Aaron later entered as a bombshell.

To viewers things appeared to be going well with the duo who weren't shy in sharing a smooch or two - and even discussed how "cute" their babies would be.

Notably Aaron insisted that he and Mary were stronger than ever when he hit out at fellow Islander Kaz Kamwi for choosing them as one of the least compatible couples in the villa.

Despite Aaron's fight for love, it appeared that the sizzling chemistry Mary and Aaron had on-screen may have fizzled out mere days after their villa stint when host Laura Whitmore asked them what's next for their relationship.

Mary said: "I think we're just going to go home, when we're back in the real world again and things are more normal we're going to see how it goes, but I have definitely made a best friend in here".

When asked about their future together, Mary answered: "We'll see how it goes."

Welp... not really instilling confidence there Mary.

Despite her comments, Aaron added: "I knew my head was firmly on Mary and it was a whirlwind experience."

However, we shouldn't be too surprised by Aaron being friendzoned by Mary as she alluded to it being "early days" for the pair moments after being dumped.

Speaking to the camera outside the villa, the model said: "It's still proper early days for us. Even though it's only been 10 days it feels like we've been seeing each other for months.

"We said we're definitely going to give it a go on the outside.

"Obviously everything changes when you get out so we said we're just going to cross each bridge as it comes to it. We're definitely going to see each other on the outside."

Unfortunately for Mary and Aaron, they narrowly missed out on Monday night's grand finale.

Love Island continues weeknights at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
