Love Island fans have branded Maura Higgins a "queen" after she stood up for herself following Tom Walker's sexist comment on Monday night's episode.

After winning Sunday's challenge, the 28-year-old was given the opportunity to spend a night in the Hideaway with a boy of her choice and she decided to choose new boy Tom.

However, Maura was left less-than-impressed after Tom said it would be interesting to see if she was "all mouth" to the rest of the boys after Tommy Fury handed him a condom.

Spectacularly standing up for herself, Maura joined the girls in the dressing room and explained the situation, and insisted she wasn't "bringing him to the Hideaway".

Realising he had ruined his chance with Maura, Tom asked the Longford native for a chat and said: "I feel like that was a miscommunication."

To which, she perfectly quipped: "What do you mean miscommunication? You said what you said! Maybe you should have been a gentleman. You shouldn't have said that about me."

After a red-faced Tom left the glam room, Maura explained why she was right to stand up for herself to the rest of the girls: "I'm not going to let anyone talk about me like a piece of garbage.

"He's trying to be a lad out there in front of all the boys. I don't want a lad, I want a gentleman. Someone who is going to talk about me with a bit of respect."

Viewers were overjoyed to see Maura standing up for herself, with one writing on Twitter: "Anyone who thinks that #LoveIsland is bad for teenage girls' self esteem better get a fkn load of Queen Maura and take some bloody notes."

"Can Maura win the show by herself? What a queen #LoveIsland," another penned.

A third fan agreed, writing: "Maura is everything QUEEN! #LoveIsland."

Despite the furore, the pair made up the following day - but it wasn't without a few strings attached as the ring girl got the model to brush her hair after he said he would do anything to get into her good books.

Love Island continues tonight on ITV2 at 9pm
