When ITV's Liar returned to our lives last week, we were hooked. But after last night's episode, devoted Series 2 fans have been left divided over what they've called a "nonsense" plot.

The new series follows on directly from the first, which saw the drama focus on teacher Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) who was doing everything in her power to prove she had been raped by surgeon, Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd).

After a tense, watch-through-your-fingers first series, it all comes to a head at the end of Series 1 when Andrew is found dead in marshland. Of course, Laura has motive for the murder - but she's adamant she didn't kill the surgeon.

As we find out, there are a handful of other suspects who also have a motive for his murder. As Laura says: "There's a long list of people who had reason to kill him. I did not murder Andrew Earlham."

But as Series 2 continued yesterday evening, some fans admitted to "having to turn off" despite being huge fans of Series 1.

Many viewers took issue with the way in which the police force have been portrayed in the second series, with one claiming it "bordered on the ridiculous".

One person tweeted: "What a joke this series is, entirely unrealistic, not a single likeable character and really boring. How not to make a follow up series."

While another wrote: "#liar on ITV... terrible portrayal of the police... can do so much better!"

Others questioned the way in which the police were portrayed to have questioned suspects, with one commenting: "Are the police questioning scenes following protocol or is there an element of artistic license? They don't seem like tactics that would be allowed by the CPS."

Another viewer agreed: "Not convinced about S2 of #Liar... sounded promising but has lost all sense of believability when they included a detective that wouldn't have passed one day of police academy."

Meanwhile, several viewers took issue with Andrew Earlham's "disguise". In both episodes one and two of Series 2, Andrew could be seen sneaking around various locations - including a hospital ICU - and getting away with all sorts of harrowing crimes, thanks to his baseball cap.

Viewers compared it to Joe Goldberg's cap in You with one writing: "Anyone else notice how in Liar, Andrew puts his hat on as a disguise and is suddenly invisible just like Joe in You?"

While another said: "Why do the sociopaths always wear a blue hat as a disguise... first Joe Goldberg, now Andrew Earlham."

A further person quipped: "That's a really clever disguise Andrew! Wearing a cap so people won't recognise you."

Some viewers, however, took an opposite stance to last night's episode and were adamant it was both gripping and packed with drama.

"Absolutely gripped by @ITV #LiarITV absolutely amazing!!" One fan tweeted.

Liar continues next Monday at 9pm on ITV.
