Lashana is finishing up talks to play Matilda's good-natured teacher in the new film, which takes inspiration from the stage production Matilda the Musical.

Matthew Warchus, who directed the stage musical, will also return to direct the film. Original playwright Dennis Kelly is adapting the screenplay, which includes music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Lashana is adding another iconic role onto her resumé after stepping into the James Bond universe for No Time Left to Die as Nomi, thought to be the new 007. The action film was originally set to debut in April 2020 but was delayed to 2nd April 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Mara Wilson, who played Matilda in the film, recently opened up about her experiences filming while her mother, Suzie Wilson, battled breast cancer. She passed away in April 1996, four months before the film's release, with the movie dedicated to Mara's mother.

Mara spoke fondly of her time working with Danny whom she described as "really wonderful" and that his family took her "under their wing as a kind of like a second family".

Danny DeVito later revealed to Mara that he showed her mother an unfinished cut of the film before she passed away.

Mara continued: "Danny and his wife, Rhea, they would let me come over to their house.
