Twilight star Kristen Stewart will take up the role of Princess Diana in new movie, Spencer.

The film documents the late Princess' life in the early 1990s - around the time of her break-up from Prince Charles.

Directed by Pablo Larrain (Jackie) and reportedly written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, it will be set in Sandringham, and will show Lady Diana Spencer as she realises her marriage is on the rocks.

"We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen," Larrain tells Deadline.

"She's a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realises that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles."

Princess Diana and Prince Charles wed in 1981, and their marriage lasted eleven years, publicly breaking down in 1992.

The pair divorced in 1996, and Diana tragically died in a car crash a year later, aged just 36.

The movie will be set across just three days during the Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor on the Royals' Sandringham estate, and will follow the Princess as she "[finds] herself", and gains an "understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well".

Fans may know Kristen best for playing Bella Swan in teenage movie Twilight.

But Spencer will be an exciting chance for her to take on another iconic - albeit very different - role, this time based on a real person, who is beloved across the globe.

"Kristin can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need," added Larrain.

She joins the likes of Naomi Watts, who played her in 2013's Diana, and Emma Corrin, who will appear as the Princess in Netflix's The Crown.
