Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband Derek Draper has stabilised enough to watch her appear on Good Morning Britain.

The presenter returned to ITV last week following four months off while Derek - who spent 98 days in hospital - battles complications caused by coronavirus in hospital.

Derek has now opened his eyes after awaking from a coma. He was previously said to have "minimum consciousness" but now Kate has shared a positive update on her husband's condition.

Speaking on Tuesday morning's episode of GMB, the presenter confirmed that her husband "looked focused and engaged" when hospital staff put the breakfast show on television.

She said: "He is stable and yesterday I spoke to the nurses and they said they had put Good Morning Britain on and they felt, because his eyes were open, that he looked focused and engaged."

"We don't know if it's the movement of the light or familiar voices," she added.

Talking with co-host Ben Shepherd, Kate quipped that her husband "never really watched me on TV before, or cared."

Ben chimed in, saying: "I don't believe that for a minute."

Kate then took the opportunity to speak directly to her husband, saying: "Good Morning Derek, if you are watching. We're all sending you lots of love and so many good wishes. Your own personal Good Morning Britain."

The presenter's comments are a hopeful update following a "tough week" for Derek, who has experienced "swelling in his legs" - possibly caused by clots - and blood pressure complications.

Talking about her husband's fragile state, Kate said: "We know that Covid can cause clotting and he has had clotting in his lungs, which is being treated to try and dissipate that.

"I suppose the concern now might be that if there are new clots forming now that he hasn't got an active Covid virus so what does that mean."

Over the weekend, Kate went to extra lengths to make her 11-year-old son Billy's birthday party extra special while his dad is in hospital.

Capital FM presenter Roman, 27, attended alongside his TV star dad Martin, 58.

Roman wore his I'm A Celeb clothes for the occasion and the birthday activities were worthy of the jungle too, with a huge water fight and obstacle course challenge in the back garden.

Kate even rigged up a tepee in the garden, along with colourful balloon arches and paddling pools.
